The quiz that started on a Friday call

HuddleQuiz is a free trivia quiz for friends, families and teams, built and run by one person.

How it started

It began as a single web page for a Friday team call: ten questions, everyone answering on their own phone, a scoreboard on the shared screen. It worked well enough to be rebuilt as a proper site that any group can use. One person starts a huddle, everyone else joins with a code, and the game runs itself.

What it is, and what it isn’t

  • Free, with no ads. Nobody signs up to play, nothing is installed and there is no paid tier; the only account is an email address, for people who write their own quizzes. The servers are paid for out of my own pocket and by people who buy me a coffee.
  • Questions written for the game. Sixteen categories, from film and music to geography and science, each question with a fact for the reveal. Every one is checked for duplicates and mistakes before it goes live, and a selection is published on the trivia questions pages.
  • Built for the 10-minute break. A Quick game is three questions and a Standard game is ten. Scoring is done for you: 100 points for a right answer and up to 100 more for speed.
  • Runs wherever you already are. The host shares a screen on Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet, or props a laptop on the kitchen table. Players only need a browser.

How it is run

The site runs on Microsoft Azure, with the game servers in the UK, and every game room is deleted a day after it opens. What is kept, and why, is set out plainly on the privacy page. There is no tracking beyond a cookieless visitor count.

Questions and packs are added in waves. A builder for your own questions is top of the roadmap.
